The idea behind our 15-second video series was to create videos specifically for platforms like Instagram and Tout. The majority of our newspapers do not have the resources to regularly create content for those channels, which also meant they were not reaching a vast audience. I saw this as an opportunity to help. One of the social video concepts I developed was to define a vague, but frequently talked about term in the news, such as “default,” “Silk Road,” or “al-Shabab,” to educate viewers about one of the top stories of the week. The series was an experiment, but the impetus for exploring new modes of storytelling was to help local newsrooms stay relevant in an increasingly social, mobile era.
